I saw the new Wonder Woman (2017) movie today.
[Warning: Spoilers – not really, but I’m putting here just in case]
Before I dive into it, I think we need to take a moment to appreciate how far the movie industry has come. Before the feature film, they played a short clip from the 1970’s Wonder Woman TV series, starring Lynda Carter (who?). The following link isn’t the same episode they played, but you get the point.

I wanted to hate this movie. I’m not a fan of superhero movies in general, as they can be cliche and predictable. I also assumed that because it had a female lead, the movie would have a big focus on gender. It did, and I loved it.
Two hours and twenty one minutes long, the plot was well-paced and captivating. The characters were diverse, the script was witty, and action scenes left you satisfied with the perfect balance of reality and ultimate destruction. The layer of mythology was a great touch too.
Gal Gadot, a stunning Israeli actress, portrays the powerful heroine that I hoped Wonder Woman would be, while maintaining a level of femininity and sincerity that is relatable.
Despite her ninja skills, adorably childlike moral compass, and ridiculously sharp intellect, the male love interest isn’t intimidated. Rather, he has his own duties to fulfill, and challenges Wonder Woman without hesitation. Where is my Steve Trevor at?
The plot touched on typical themes like good/evil and the nature of humans, but managed to reel it back in before getting too stuck in cheese. Congratulations to the both the people in front and behind the camera for creating something that’s sure to be cherished for decades.
It’s hard to leave the theater and return to our ‘normal’ lives without a sense of longing… to be super… to be part of a world beyond our own. We all want powers, but for this lifetime, we may have to settle for what our imaginations can envision, and what creatives like Patty Jenkins (the director) can construct for us.
(And if we want to touch on warm fuzzy feelings, the storyline did a solid job of reminding viewers that we may not be able to fly, but love and sacrifice are beautiful powers that human beings have. – nice try DC, but I still want to fly)
In short, this is a badass film with a badass female lead, directed by a badass female director, with a bunch of badass fight scenes. It has it all.
Go see it.
